Every October healthcare facilities, companies, public figures, and athletes nationwide adorn the color pink and the pink ribbon to show their support for breast cancer awareness month. Breast cancer awareness month serves as a valuable reminder to get your annual mammogram screening. A mammogram is an x-ray that allows a qualified specialist to examine the breast tissue for any suspicious areas. Regular mammogram screenings are crucial because breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women according to the American Cancer Society.

Follow these tips from the National Breast Cancer Foundation to help change the statistic:
  • Women should perform a self-breast exam each month and any changes or abnormalities should be discussed with a doctor or physician.
  • Leading a healthy lifestyle can help you reduce your risk factors for breast cancer and other illnesses.
  • Early warning signs of breast cancer may involve the discovery of a new lump or a change in the breast tissue or skin.

Most healthcare facilities adapt their own mammogram screening guidelines based off of recommendations from varying agencies. However, if you are under the age of 40 and have a family history of breast cancer or other risk factors, or if you are 40 years of age or older, talk with your healthcare professional about scheduling a mammogram screening today.

I encourage you to learn about your risk factors for breast cancer and inspire someone this October to schedule an annual mammogram screening for early detection!
